IB(International Baccalaurate) 국제 바켈로레아 ??
IB는 스위스에 본부를 둔 비영리 교육재단인 IBO(International Baccalaureate Organization)가 개발·운영하는 국제 표준 교육과정과 대입시험이다. 1968년 타국에 체류하고 있는 외교관이나 상사 주재원 자녀를 위한 시험으로 개발된 IB는 전 세계 153개국 5288개 학교(올해 3월 기준)에서 운용하고 있으며, 75개국 2,000여개 대학이 IB점수로 학생을 선발하고 있다.
독일·스위스·노르웨이, 캐나다와 미국 일부 주정부 등은 IB를 오랫동안 대입시험으로 활용해왔다. 자국 대입 시험도 있지만 IB를 대입 시험에 준하도록 인정하는 추세다. 일본도 2013년 아시아 최초로 IBO와 협정을 체결한 후 IB를 공교육에 도입하기 위해 적극 나서고 있다.
국내에서는 송도 채드윅국제학교, 제주 브랭섬홀아시아국제학교, 경기 수원외국인학교, 경기외고 등 12개 학교에서 IB를 채택하고 있다. IBO 본부가 인정하는 학교에서 2년간 수업을 받은 후 공통으로 실시하는 입학시험에 합격하면 이 제도를 실시하는 가맹 국가의 대학에 입학하거나 시험을 볼 수 있는 자격이 주어진다. 국내 외국인학교의 경우 주로 IB 과정 이수 후 해외 대학에 진학하고 있다.
IB 프로그램의 특징은?
IB 교육과정은 초등 과정 PYP(Primary Years Programme), 중등 과정 MYP(Middle Years Programme), 고등 과정 DP(Diploma Programme)으로 구성되어 있다.
IB과정의 가장 큰 특징은 다면적, 통합적 사고를 이끌어내는 토론식 수업과 논술형 절대 평가다. 하나의 질문에 한 개의 정답만을 요구하는 교육이 아니라, 한 개의 질문에 백 개의 생각을 존중하는 교육으로 창의력을 키워줄 수 있는 교육으로 인정받고 있다.
IB 프로그램의 세가지 핵심 구성요소는 지식의 이론, 창의력 활동 서비스, 장문 에세이다. 필수과목 그룹은 수학, 과학, 언어 및 문학(영어), 언어습득(제2외국어), 개인과 사회, 예술 등 6가지이며 각 그룹 내의 모든 과목들은 각각 상위 레벨과 표준 레벨 과정으로 구분되어 있다. 통상 표준레벨은 1년, 상위레벨은 2년에 걸쳐 해당 수업을 이수해야 한다.
